The United Kingdom and the United States have forged a landmark commercial pact that will guarantee no duties on UK pharmaceutical shipments being sold in the US market.
Agreement Details of the Pact
In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on pharmaceuticals through the National Health Service (NHS). This commitment ensures that tariffs on these key goods will stay at zero for a period of the next three years.
This development follows recent statements to hike tariffs on patented pharmaceutical products, with figures mentioned as high as double the cost.
"This deal between the UK bolsters the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue balance to U.S.–U.K. medicine commerce," a statement declared.
Trade Impact
Pharmaceuticals are one of the Britain's largest export categories to the US, which is easily the biggest destination for leading British pharmaceutical firms.
Export figures show that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products worth over eleven billion pounds to the US. This figure accounted for nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that span.

The deal entails several specific changes from the British government:
