Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
